Types of jobs

There are three basic types of DataStage job:

  • Server jobs. These are compiled and run on the DataStage server. A server jobwill connect to databases on other machines as necessary, extract data, process it,then write the data to the target data warehouse.
  • Parallel jobs. These are available only if you have Enterprise Edition installed.Parallel jobs are compiled and run on a DataStage UNIX server, and can be run inparallel on SMP, MPP, and cluster systems.
  • Mainframe jobs. These are available only if you have Enterprise MVS Editioninstalled. A mainframe job is compiled and run on the mainframe. Data extractedby such jobs is then loaded into the data warehouse.

There are two other entities that are similar to jobs in the way they appear in theDataStage Designer, and are handled by it. These are:

Shared containers.

These are reusable job elements. They typically comprise a number of stages andlinks. Copies of shared containers can be used in any number of server jobs andedited as required.

Job Sequences.

A job sequence allows you to specify a sequence of DataStage jobs to be executed, and actions to take depending on results
